Course Description:

This course discusses the practical as well as the technical and regulatory aspects of environmental sampling, with emphasis on soil, piles, tanks, streams, groundwater, and other environmental media.  Topics covered include:

·          Why environmental sampling is performed.

·          Importance of defensible samples.

·          Importance of proper, complete documentation.

·          Sampling guidance documents.

·          The environmental sampling process, from beginning to end.

·          Components of a sampling request and information required to perform environmental sampling.

·          Knowledge of the items required in a work package prior to start of sampling activities.

·          Selection of suitable sampling method for a particular environmental matrix.

·          Contamination control and equipment decontamination.

·          Operation of various sampling equipment, including corer, COLIWASA, scoop, bailer, and other various sampling alternatives.

·          Random sampling.

·          Authoritative sampling.

·          Sampling the correct points in various waste media piles and configurations.

·          Types of field samples and QC samples.

·          Forming and properly mixing composite samples.

·          Filling sample bottles, preparing sample labels, and preparing and applying COC seals.

·          Preparing sample COCs.

·          Applying TIDs to waste containers.

·          Sample preservation.

·          Field log book entries.

·          Proper discard of waste generated during sampling activities.

·          Proper turn over of samples to analytical laboratory.

Mandates/Drivers:

RCRA, PCB, and CERCLA regulations and DOE orders require proper environmental site characterization and monitoring; defensible sampling is an integral part of the site characterization and monitoring process.

Terminal Objective:

Sampling personnel will become familiar with the regulatory, technical, and practical aspects of environmental sampling and will understand the sampling process, including sampling process initiation, sampling preparation activities, sampling activities, sampling documentation, and sample transfer to the analytical laboratory under chain of custody.
