Course Description:

This course discusses the practical as well as the technical and regulatory aspects of waste sampling, with emphasis on hazardous, PCB, and radioactive and mixed waste sampling. Topics covered include:

• Why waste is sampled.
• Importance of defensible samples.
• Importance of proper, complete documentation.
• Sampling guidance documents.
• The sampling process, from beginning to end.
• Information required to perform sampling.
• Selection of suitable sampling method for a particular waste matrix.
• Contamination control and equipment decontamination.
• Operation of various sampling equipment, including corer, COLIWASA, scoop, and scissors.
• Authoritative sampling based on visual inspection for contamination.
• Random sampling based on a grid system.
• Sampling the correct points in various waste containers.
• Types of field samples and QC samples.
• Forming and properly mixing composite samples.
• Filling sample bottles, preparing sample labels, and preparing and applying COC seals.
• Preparing sample COCs.
• Sample preservation.
• Field log book entries.
• Proper discard of waste generated during sampling activities.
• Proper turn over of samples to analytical laboratory.

Mandates/Drivers:

RCRA, PCB, and CERCLA regulations and DOE orders require proper waste characterization; defensible waste sampling is an integral part of the waste characterization process.

Terminal Objective:

Sampling personnel will become familiar with the regulatory, technical, and practical aspects of waste sampling and will understand the waste sampling process, including sampling process initiation, sampling preparation activities, sampling activities, sampling documentation, and sample transfer to the analytical laboratory under chain of custody.
