Course Description:
The
Waste Characterization Course was developed to provide training on the federal
regulations that drive hazardous waste characterization in DOE facilities and
is presented in four modules. Module 1 Waste Characterization Basics includes a
review of terminology pertaining to waste characterization. Module 2 Hazardous
and Radioactive Waste Identification focuses on RCRA hazardous waste
characterization6, PCB materials and limits, and radioactive waste
identification and characterization. Module 3 Waste Characterization Process
discusses sampling and analysis, sample plans, the interface between the
characterization process and waste acceptance criteria and a review of waste
packaging and labeling requirements. Module 4 Disposal Site Waste Acceptance
Criteria provides a spreadsheet of the primary disposal sites with key
requirements and restrictions for various waste types at each location.
Participants are also given 5 practical exercises to test the understanding of
the course objective.
