DUTIES: Provide Health Physics/Radiological Engineering support to SRS projects and operations. This is to include:
§ Review proposed designs and assist projects and operations in developing methods to ensure radiological design standard requirements are met, including:
o Radiation exposure limits,
o Facility and equipment layout,
o Access control,
o External radiation exposure,
o Internal radiation exposure,
o Radiological monitoring systems (including airborne, personnel contamination and area radiation monitors)
o Facility operations, maintenance, decontamination and decommissioning,
o Change rooms,
o Breathing air systems,
o Contamination control (including confinement, ventialation, access ways and transfer pipes/encasements,
o Material radiation tolerance and compatibility,
o Radioactive waste handling,
o Spill prevention and control,
o Radiological control space requirements and,
o Methods to keep exposures as low as reasonably achievable.
§ Provide technical basis for evaluations using recognized radiological calculation methods.
§ Document calculations by verifiable calculations per SRS conduct of technical procedures.
§ Document other evaluations in writing per approved administrative protocol.
Experience performing radiological design reviews is required and experience in plutonium processing is highly desirable.
Expertise in performing radiological calculations including shielding calculations, project collective dose studies, and internal dose potential calculations is required.
Experience is required in nuclear computer codes including MCNP and SCALE. Experience is desirable in other codes and software.
American Board of Health Physics Certification is highly desirable.
The position requires an in-depth knowledge of applied health physics with emphasis in radiological engineering services, radiological monitoring equipment and ALARA principles. Requires a working knowledge of DOE Orders, 10CFR835, health physics industry standards and good practices and guidance from national and international organizations and technical authorities.
A variety of nuclear experience is preferred including performing internal and external dose assessments, organization self-assessments, root cause investigations, and administrative program development.
